by Andrew Miller. "A young engineer is given a task - to empty the cemetery of Les Innocents in Paris in 1785. The graveyard is so full of decaying bodies that the smell permeates the surrounding streets of Paris, the food is tainted, the locals all have sour breath. Jean-Baptiste finds himself in a strange world with a strange job and the result is delightful. I loved the atmosphere of this book and found myself completely engrossed in the story of the cemetery and the characters linked to it. Imagine having to excavate a pit of bones so deep there is little oxygen at the bottom. Loved it."
